The final hoops

When you try to become a lawyer, you have to jump through a bunch of hoops.

You know - go to law school, listen to professors try to confuse you and back you into a corner of their Socratic Method of questioning, take a bunch of exams on stuff that you'll never use in practice, then apply to take the Bar Exam, take the Bar Exam, which is miserable, and then once you pass, you still have to show up in court and motion the judge to let you practice law.

Well friends. I finally finished all of the hoops. I was hoping that I could get sworn in from D.C., but that was a no go. So I visited Michigan to get sworn in. I can now officially practice law!! :)

The judge and I after I'm official.
I'm kind of a big deal in my family.

Now I'm on to happy lawyering.

Applying my education

As I'm studying for professional responsibility (don't lie, attorney-client privilege, etc), I learned a very valuable life lesson.

Rule: You have a duty to end the relationship even when you might not think that there is a relationship.

...

Duly noted for application beyond the law.

Interestingly, I had a conversation with this boy about break ups. He confessed; he's an "avoider" so that the relationship just naturally fizzles out. A little cowardly, but we've all been there... (right?) But I can't judge - I'm not any more mature. I said, I'd rather be broken up with than do the breaking up. (But surprisingly, I've been the breaker-upper more often even using my How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days prowess). Neil Sedaka was 100% right.

Life Update

1. I don't think I had food poisoning because I had other symptoms associated with the flu. I'm still recovering. Taking life one day at a time. Hopefully getting my energy back soon to gear up for finals.

2. I went to Chicago the last week of February to make contacts with BYU Alum and JRCLS (Mormon Lawyers) in the city because I want to work there. I should be hearing back from one in particular today (Hopefully!)

3. Other job leads - I have a call back interview with BYU General Counsel next week. This would be a great opportunity, but it's the whole summer in Provo... so it's a pretty serious decision I'm going to have to make. Also, I have an interview with a law firm in Sacramento next week. Please pray for me to do well and get job offers from these avenues!

Spring Break?

I don't think I thought this through very carefully. ... I'm on spring break. I'm hanging out in the Library and looking at gray skies and a high of 34 F and snow showers. I thought getting away would be amazing!

But then I forgot that it was still winter, and decided to go to Chicago for my Spring Break. What was I thinking?

The previous 3 breaks that I've had, I've spent in the Law Library working on papers. At least for this one, I'm in a library with windows... (and editing rather than writing papers)

I've also learned that I really do have a cat allergy. I thought I was making it up. Well, the red eyes and wheezes tell me that I wasn't making it up. We'll see what Claritin does for me.

... CAN'T ... FOCUS

So it's Friday afternoon, I'm tired and cranky, and I can't focus on what I need to be doing - writing a 12 page memo. The whole world is against me.

1. It's actually sunny outside
2. Screaming babies in the library. Hello! It's the law library - there is no Dr. Seuss here. Send your kid to circumvent the earth in an experimental weather balloon.
3. Chatty people - I am the best eavesdropper in the entire world. Trust me.
4. The INTERNET (this is a terrible and great invention)
5. I don't want to figure out my research and make sense of it.

so it's going to be a long afternoon and an even longer Saturday... FOCUS!

ok ok, I guess that's enough whining for today.
