The Bishop mentioned touching a guy on the elbow on multiple occasions during his lesson, and I had a puzzled look on my face. The elbow? So I asked the girl sitting next to me and she was like, "yeah, didn't you know that if you touch a guy's elbow 3 times in a conversation, he's more likely to ask you out? ... It's a subconscious thing that they've done psychological studies on."
No, I had no idea. That is the weirdest theory/study. I understand that physical contact is important (both subconsciously and consciously), however, I had never heard about the specifically touching the elbow. I really think it is a Provo myth because everyone seemed to already know it. (I've been doing an informal survey this week).
Either way, I think this calls for an experiment. Or challenge. Don't worry, I plan on reporting back on my findings. ...

I remember my freshman year RA spreading the gospel of the elbow touch, which she had just learned about in her marriage prep course (oh BYU...). According to BYU female undergrad rumor, if you touch a guy on the elbow three times, he will ask you on a date. I do not have personal experience with this. In fact, when someone touches me on the elbow, it weirds me out. It's possible that this is a direct result of having lived in Provo and learned about the elbow trick in the first place.
Old school AA we called it the Burnside touch. Though, we talked about it in relation to how you interact with a guy on a first date. (If you only touch the elbow at the end of the night in lieu of a hug or something, he's out, but if you touch him like that earlier in the date then it is likely for a date #2.)
They just don't want you touching any other part of a guy multiple times. I bet if you manage to touch his face three times he'll ask you to marry him. You know food on his face, cutting his hair, and scruff.
I just want you to know that I refrained from saying anything smart, cheeky or snarky ;) Let me know what the results of your survey are.
But how does touching a guy's elbow relate to chastity?
