Lingering thoughts from this month

I read a study earlier this month about how "retail therapy" really does make you happier. I'm waiting for the study that says crushing debt also makes you happy, but I have yet to find it.

Regardless, in the last two months I've probably taken the "retail therapy" route more than I'm used to. I finally decided that I need to get some nice dresses and professional clothes.

And I must have looked like a schlub before because everyone noticed my updated wardrobe. It was time.

February goes by so fast! It's only 2-3 days shorter than other months, but holy cow! Can anyone believe how fast it's flown by?

It's probably because the first 14 days I'm grudgingly thinking about how I don't have any special Valentine's plans and the days leading up to the day are here before you know it (even though this year I had a great Valentine's Day with my family); and the second half of the month, you can't believe how much candy you still have left over from your gluttony over the previous fact so you cruise through the days on sugar highs.

I mean Valentine's Day and Fat Tuesday in the same week? There was no chance I was going to stick to my health regiment this month...

But in good news, the end of February means, that Spring should be here soon! Although it's much warmer in Washington, DC than it is in Detroit, I commute to work via walking and metro, so I've definitely been feeling the chill. But at least most days are sunny even if they chill you to the bone. Sunny days really do sweep the [internal/personal] clouds away.

Happy March everybody!

Lack of Diversity

One of my coworkers guessed that in a random picture of me, I would be wearing purple. As it turns out - I  was. And as I thought about it, I realized that I wear a lot of purple. So I went to my closet and gathered my purple clothes and took a photo. I probably have a couple of additional pieces that I didn't see right away.

Maybe to you this doesn't seem like that much purple. But this is probably 1/4 of my clothes. I wear purple at least once and probably often twice a week... I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But apparently, I'm the purple girl.

Sorry this post wasn't that interesting. But I hope you feel better about your wardrobe now. And I hope you iron. Because obviously, I don't.

Insight

These are my random thoughts that I've been wanting to somehow turn into a blog post, but they really have no rhyme or reason...

I've been thinking lately about "breaking up" with friends. Normally, a friendship just kinds of drifts apart, but I wonder if people ever 'break up' with their friends. I try to be a good friend (let's face it, I don't have that many close friends, so beggars shouldn't be choosy) and sometimes I feel shafted on the return. But overall, friendship is just like any relationship, a little bit of give and take. Life is crazy, and I feel blessed to have people in my life that make it better.

In other random thoughts...
“Losing your mind is not a luxury for the middle class” – PS, I Love You (not a very good movie). Sometimes we think money will solve all of our problems, but if had to choose between being rich and insane, or sane and working for a living, I choose to keep my mind. It's one of the best things I've got.

From "The Talent Code"
"We believe that people are shy not because they lack social skills but because they haven't practiced them sufficiently" ... "Talking on the phone or asking someone on a date is a learnable skill, exactly like a tennis forehand. The key is that people have to linger in that uncomfortable area, learn to tolerate the anxiety. If you practice, you can get to the level you want." ... This is what I read for a class this week. At least my lack of social skills can be corrected! ;)

This was a little random, but it's how I've been feeling lately. A little random.

Lesson learned from Tarzan: Love Letters

If I were to write a love letter to someone, I may want to take Tarzan's advice. I mean, he does end up with the girl in the end... right?

So it would go something like this:

"I am Melanie of the humans. I want you. I am yours. You are mine."

Pretty simple... we should all take a leaf out of Tarzan's book.

(Although I am still wondering how he can write when he grew up with gorillas. They must have had a great school system)
